Brazilian pharmaceutical distributor, Active Pharmaceutica, and product development supplier, BioActor, team up to promote and distribute Bioactor’s proprietary sports performance ingredient in Brazil. We spoke to BioActor’s CEO, Hans van der Saag to find out more.

Working together

Already available in the US and Europe, BioActor is now setting its sights on expansion in Latin America, by entering the marketplace through Brazil’s compounding pharmacy market.

Under their partnership agreement, Dutch BioActor will see its proprietary sports performance ingredient, WATTS’UP, targeted at, and distributed in, the compounding pharmacy market in Brazil.

Active Pharmaceutica will apply its specialist experience in importing and distributing raw materials in Brazil, while BioActor will support its promotion by providing scientific and formulation input.

Brazil-based Active Pharmaceutica imports and distributes pharmaceutical products that supply nutraceuticals, botanical extracts, probiotics and other bioactives to Brazilian compounding pharmacies.

Sports nutrition expansion

WATTS’UP is a customized flavonoid extract from sweet orange. The sports nutrition extract can be formulated in a wide range of sports and exercise nutritional products.

Speaking about the partnership, BioActor’s CEO, Hans van der Saag, reveals that the duo first met at an event in Geneva, where Active Pharmaceutica was looking for a sports nutrition ingredient with clinical studies and strong science.

Actively engaged in the compounding pharmacy market in Brazil since 2015, BioActor reveals that following its “rapidly expanding sales” of its citrus-based gut health ingredient MicrobiomeX, it recognized that now was the right time to expand the company’s footprint by entering into the Latin American marketplace.

Identifying Brazil as its first entry point, Hans van der Saag went on to explain that: The Brazilian market is rapidly growing and very demanding on the level of scientific substantiation.”

After seeing its partners’ success when using medical specialists to review its science and convey the benefits of its products to compounding pharmacists, BioActor centered on growing its presence in Brazil.

BioActor supplies proprietary bioactive formulations to the nutrition and healthcare industry, focusing on addressing healthy living and ageing. The company notes that it has invested in gaining deep insights into consumer behavior and sports nutrition needs through marketing to understand how best to appeal to the Latin American consumer market.

Scientific studies

Tested in two placebo-controlled and double-blind studies, WATTS’UP was found to produce both an aerobic and anaerobic power increase in athletes. The sports nutrition product was also identified as having a positive effect on the efficiency of the mitochondria and helps to increase ATP production.

BioActor’s most recent clinical study on the capabilities of WATTS’UP demonstrated its peak power impact in a Wingate Test in moderately trained male and female participants. Their research indicated that a low daily dose of 400-mg was sufficient to achieve this benefit.

Reaching consumers

When it comes to sports performance products and ingredients, consumers are looking for “natural, clean/safe and proven nutrition to support them in sports and exercise”.

Together, Active Pharmaceutica and BioActor hope to grow the product’s presence in the Brazilian compounding pharmacy market by combining scientific and formulation advice with a developed marketing strategy.

Active Pharmaceutica will also focus on bringing a specialist doctor in sports and energy nutrition on board to help develop the duo’s collaboration and entry.

As for the near future, “we are now looking at Mexico as one potential country to expand BioActor’s product portfolio”, van der Saag confirms.
