Norwegian fishery and biotech company Aker BioMarine announced that it has partnered with Kilyos Nutrition to introduce its Superba Krill oil ingredient to key supplement brands in Brazil.

“We believe this partnership marks a significant milestone, and we are excited to embark on this journey with Kilyos,” said Mercè Piñol, senior vice president of sales for human health ingredients for EMEA and LATAM at Aker BioMarine. “A key aspect of our Superba Krill oil strategy for the development of the market is based on having a well-established partner who possesses the local knowledge, network and high qualifications to meet our common growth ambitions.”

Food supplements entering the Brazilian market must pass a rigorous registration process required by the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency (ANVISA) to confirm the safety and efficacy of an ingredient or product.

An exciting new market

Piñol said that Brazil is an exciting new market for Aker BioMarine and that the company is looking forward to driving innovations in different health areas and in the omega-3 space. It is the largest market for dietary supplements in Latin America.

“Supplements in Brazil are sold through practitioners, and the health areas we will focus on include heart, liver, pregnancy and cognitive health,” she told NutraIngredients-USA. “We also see opportunities to combine our krill with other well-known ingredients to help innovate with existing formulations.”

To bring new products to market, the Kilyos Science Lab works with local clients to brainstorm market trends and needs, develop products based on clinical trials and regulatory analysis, and implement promotional materials and sales force training.

Superba Krill joins other leading ingredients in the Kilyos portfolio including Albion mineral amino acid chelates and VitaCholine (Balchem), MenaQ7 (NattoPharma), AstaReal Astaxanthin (Fuji Chemical Industries), Longvida Optimized Curcumin (Verdure Sciences) and ColostrumOne (Pantheryx).

“We would like to thank our new partner Aker BioMarine for the opportunity to include Superba Krill in the Kilyos portfolio,” said Dr. José João Name, MD, PhD, director of Kilyos Nutrition. “Superba Krill is a safe and proven active ingredient in various organic conditions, and this allows us to meet the new and demanding expectations of the Brazilian market.”

He explained that Brazilian consumers are increasingly aware of and committed to improving their lifestyles and are looking for scientifically proven and environmentally conscious alternatives to fish oil.

Superba Krill

Extracted from Euphausia Superba krill, a species of small shrimp-like crustaceans that are wild-harvested in the pristine waters of the Antarctic Ocean, Superba Krill oil is marketed as a next-generation, highly sustainable, 100% traceable multi-nutrient that contains a combination of phospholipids, EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids, choline and astaxanthin.

“The advantage comes from our patented concentration of phospholipids which deliver omega-3s and choline efficiently into the cell membrane for whole body support—this is ultimately the X factor and a huge differentiator among krill oil compared to other options,” Piñol explained. “And the health benefits range from heart and liver to cognition, joints, skin and more.”

In addition to the list of possible claims as standalone supplement, Aker Biomarine also positions Superba Krill as the perfect complementary ingredient for blended multi-nutrient products that respond to the rising customer interest in combination formulations in areas like eye health, joint health and PMS.

Kilyos confirmed that Superba Krill oil has ANVISA approval for food supplements with the claims "source of omega-3" for those that meet the minimum requirement of EPA and DHA and "omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA help reduce triglycerides" for at least 1,500 mg of combined EPA and DHA per day.

Since 2006, Aker BioMarine has contributed to more than 200 articles and over 50 studies to substantiate the nutritional value and potential health benefits of the Superba Krill oil nutrients, Piñol said, and continues to research benefits for healthy aging, skin health, women’s health and liver health.

“Krill oil is a scientifically proven ingredient, plus it’s water soluble and oil dispersible, making it a great option for formulators and future innovation,” she added. “Finally, with the current turbulence in the omega-3 industry, Aker BioMarine can provide product availability and price stability to its customers.”
